Re: SATURDAY NIGHT FEBRUARY 2 Golden Isles Speedway
Moran fastest for finale at Golden Isles
Donnie Moran of Dresden, Ohio, was the fastest overall among 59 qualifiers in the final round of Golden Isles Speedway's Super Bowl of Racing IV. Moran will start on the front row of the third heat as the O'Reilly Southern All Star Series employed group qualifying at the 4/10-mile oval in southeast Georgia. Other drivers starting on the poles of heat races: Terry Casey of New London, Wis.; Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; newcomer Eric Jacobsen of Santa Cruz, Calif.; Tim Fuller of Edwards, N.Y.; and the winner of the previous two races at Golden Isles, Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn. The top three finishers in six heat races will make up the first nine rows of the feature event. Two consolations will send two drivers apiece to the feature and two provisional starters will be added to the field as well. Pre-race notebook Although the Southern All Stars don't typically use group qualifying, the series went to the system because the moisture in the track would have caused a vast disparity in times from the beginning to the end of the 59 qualifying. The group qualifying sets 10 drivers who qualify and heat race only among each other. ... The only new driver on hand for Saturday's action was Eric Jacobsen of Santa Cruz, Calif., fielding his Bloomquist Race Car. ... After wrecking his car Friday, Southern All Star rookie of the year candidate Anthony Hill took a seat in fellow Georgia driver Clint Smith's backup car to he could gather series points. "We've got it set up for East Bay now," Smith said, "and he's going to try it out for us." ... A total of 27 drivers that have raced at Golden Isles earlier in Super Late Model competition have departed from the track. ... Because Dillon Wood switched cars but failed to move his transponder, his time trial was taken by stopwatch. ... Heading into the final event, Jimmy Owens has already locked up the $10,000 Dart Winternationals bonus as the top driver during the seven-race series (three rainouts shortened the event from the original 10 races). |

Re: SATURDAY NIGHT FEBRUARY 2 Golden Isles Speedway
HEAT RACES Donnie Moran was the fastest overall qualifier for Saturday's finale at Golden Isles Speedway's Super Bowl of Racing IV. The top three finishers in six heat races will make up the first nine rows of the feature event. Two B - MAINS will send two drivers apiece to the feature and two provisional starters will be added to the field as well. First heat; Billy Moyer edged polesitter Donnie Moran In a battle of multiple-time World 100 winners, outside front-row starter Billy Moyer edged polesitter Donnie Moran with two laps remaining to grab the pole position for the 50-lap feature. Jimmy Owens made a mid-race pass of Bodine Massengill to grab the third spot while Massengill and Clint Smith rounded out the top five. Finish (1) Billy Moyer, (2) Donnie Moran, (3) Jimmy Owens, (4) Bodine Massengill, (5) Clint Smith, (6) Dale Hammond, (7) Anthony White, (8) Randle Chupp, (9) Chesley Dixon, (10) Homer Leonard. Second heat; Steve Francis outran fellow front-row starter Tim Fuller Polesitter Eric Jacobsen dominated to win by a quarter-lap over Mark Andersen, who finished second to transfer to his first feature in seven attempts. Shannon Babb finished third ahead of Rick Eckert, who moved past Josh Richards for fourth in the final laps. Finish: (1) Eric Jacobsen, (2) Mark Andersen, (3) Shannon Babb, (4) Rick Eckert, (5) Josh Richards, (6) Shane Clanton, (7) Jason McBride, (8) Chuck Harper, (9) Stacy Holmes. Third heat; Francis beats Fuller in third heat Steve Francis outran fellow front-row starter and fellow No. 19 driver Tim Fuller for a 10-lap victory. Ricky Elliott got the third spot after Dave Tyrchniewicz, who ran as high as second, twice nearly lost control and fell out of contention. Dave "Turk," as he's called up in Canada, took the third spot on the third lap from Billy Decker, who spun with a flat tire a lap later. Finish: (1) Steve Francis, (2) Tim Fuller, (3) Ricky Elliott, (4) Dan Schlieper, (5) Dave Tychniewicz, (6) Joe Isabell, (7) Dale Groves Jr., (8) Billy Decker, (9) Shanon Buckingham. Fourth heat; Scott Bloomquist won a critical race with Chris Madden Scott Bloomquist won a critical race with fellow front-row starter Chris Madden into the first corner and cruised to a victory. Madden spent the first eight laps fighting off challenges from Michael England, but England spun by himself in turn four to bring out a caution and fall from contention. Sixth-starting Darren Miller inherited the third spot for the lap-eight restart and finished there. Jason Fitzgerald finished fourth, just ahead of Kelly Boen and England. Finish: (1) Scott Bloomquist, (2) Chris Madden, (3) Darren Miller, (4) Jason Fitzgerald, (5) Kelly Boen, (6) Michael England, (7) Tony Knowles, (8) Dennis Erb Jr., (9) Anthony Hill, (10) Ed Basey. Fifth heat; Casey's slide job wins fifth heat Polesitter Terry Casey's lap-four slide job in turn four gave him the lead over Matt Miller and Casey pulled away the rest of the way. Miller settled for second, nearly a straightaway behind, while Ivedent Lloyd Jr., recovering from a mid-race miscue, took the third and final transfer spot from Steve Shaver on the second-to-last lap. Shaver and Dillon Wood rounded out the top five. Finish: (1) Terry Casey, (2) Matt Miller, (3) Ivedent Lloyd Jr., (4) Steve Shaver, (5) Dillon Wood, (6) Vic Coffey, (7) James Ward, (8) Chub Frank, (9) Justin Rattliff, (10) Tim McCreadie. Sixth heat; Earl Pearson Jr. led all the way Polesitter Earl Pearson Jr. led all the way for an easy victory while Derek Ellis finished second to earn his first starting berth in a Super Bowl feature. Damon Eller, who nearly caught Ellis on the final lap, fought off challenges from Brady Smith late in the race for the third and final transfer spot. Smith was fourth and Tyler Ivey a distant fifth. Finish: (1) Earl Pearson Jr., (2) Derek Ellis, (3) Damon Eller, (4) Brady Smith, (5) Tyler Ivey, (6) John Blankenship, (7) G.R. Smith, (8) Danny Johnson, (9) Casey Roberts, (10) Mark Vineyard. ************************************************** ***************** First B- MAIN; Steve Shaver went on to a consolation victory filled with cautions Steve Shaver edged polesitter Bodine Massengill with a turn-four pass on the second lap and went on to a consolation victory. Dan Schlieper overtook Massengill a lap later and held that spot the rest of the way. Massengill lost another spot to Vic Coffey on a lap-four restart as he faded from contention. Shaver, Schlieper and Coffey finished far ahead of the pack in the caution-plagued race. A first-lap caution came out when Dale Groves Jr. got crossed up on the backstretch. Anthony White was also collected. A caution appeared on the fourth lap when Billy Decker spun between turns three and four and on the sixth lap when Dale Hammond spun in turn two. Three more cautions appeared on lap-six restarts, including one for a spinning Dillon Wood in turn two. Only seven cars finished a race originally slated to include 21 cars. Finish: (1) Steve Shaver, (2) Dan Schlieper, (3) Vic Coffey, (4) Bodine Massengill, (5) Clint Smith, (6) Joe Isabel, (7) Justin Rattliff. Scratched: Chub Frank, Randle Chupp, Shanon Buckingham, Chesley Dixon, Tim McCreadie and Steven Howard. Second B - MAIN Brady Smith took the lead from Jason Fitzgerald near the midway point and led the rest of the way while Fitzgerald lost the second spot on the eighth lap when a low-running Josh Richards made contact in sliding past in turn four. Richards, who drifted high into the upper groove in making his pass, took the second and final transfer spot but Fitzgerald wasn't pleased, pulling alongside Richards as the cars exited the track and revved his engine, cutting just in front Richards. Fitzgerald was third with Kelly Boen and polesitter Rick Eckert, who got off to a poor start, fifth. Finish: (1) Brady Smith, (2) Josh Richards, (3) Jason Fitzgerald, (4) Kelly Boen, (5) Rick Eckert, (6) Michael England, (7) John Blankenship, (8) Tyler Ivey, (9) Tony Knowles, (10) Chuck Harper, (11) G.R. Smith, (12) Danny Johnson, (13) Jason McBride, (14) Shane Clanton, (15) Dennis Erb Jr., (16) Stacy Holmes, (17) Anthony Hill, (18) Casey Roberts. Scratched: Ed Basey and Mark Vineyard. ************************************************** ****************** Non-qualifiers' race Front-row starters Jason Fitzgerald and Vic Coffey pulled away from the field for a race-long battle at the front of the pack, a battle that got interesting as the came upon the lapped car of Danny Johnson on the final lap. They rolled past Johnson on either side exiting turn four as Fitzgerald edged Coffey. Both earned starting spots in the feature. Kelly Boen finished a distant third while further back was Clint Smith and RIck Eckert. Bodine Massengill started inside the second row but slowed to a stop on the third lap to bring out a caution. Finish: (1) Jason Fitzgerald, (2) Vic Coffey, (3) Kelly Boen, (4) Clint Smith, (5) Rick Eckert, (6) Billy Decker, (7) John Blankenship, (8) Tony Knowles, (9) Tyler Ivey, (10) Danny Johnson. I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS, TO ME THAT MAKES 3 B - MAINS TONIGHT |

Re: SATURDAY NIGHT FEBRUARY 2 Golden Isles Speedway
Feature Notes
As the main event in Golden Isles Super Bowl of Racing IV's finale got underway, front-row starters Billy Moyer and Eric Jacobsen got together exiting turn two. Jacobsen spun and Moyer came away with a flat right rear tire. Officials called for a complete restart with Moyer and Jacobsen up front, if Moyer can change his tire in time. Moyer made it back, but Jacobsen decided to pit. On the next start, Moyer again slowed exiting turn two. While the caution flew and the field slowed, Mark Andersen's car got upside down in turn three. He climbed from the car, apparently unhurt. Jacobsen, who spun on the first start after getting together with Moyer exiting turn two, pulled into the pits before the second start. The third start will include Moyer on front row if he can make it back on the track before the one to go signal is given by Southern All Star offiicials. Jacobsen, who went to the pits, broke a steering rack and will be able to make it back to the track for the third start. Big Wreck in turn 2 ABOUT 6 CARS...Kid Rocket involved in crash... Vic coffey also.... Matt Miller on the move looking for 3rd from Jacobsen! The caution appeared when third-starting Scott Bloomquist slowed after dropping out of contention in the early laps. Race restarts with Bloomer still in the pits. Moyer will lead on the restart followed by Steve Francis, Eric Jacobsen, Chris Madden and Jimmy Owens, who started 13th. AFTER 15 LAPS Polesitter Billy Moyer, surviving a flat tire and suspension problems suffered on the first two starts, led Steve Francis by a half-straightaway after 15 laps. Eric Jacobsen is third followed by Matt Miller and Earl Pearson Jr. Scott Bloomquist, who won the previous two Super Bowl events, had problems and dropped out on the 20th lap. Three-race winner Jimmy Owens was sixth. The finishes are unofficial. Getting his first victory for new car owner Dale Beitler, Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky., took the lead from polesitter Billy Moyer midway through the 50-lap finale at Golden Isles Speedway's Super Bowl of Racing IV for a victory worth $10,000. Moyer stayed within striking distance of Francis much of the second half of the race, but he faded in the final laps to settle for second with fellow front-row starter Eric Jacobsen finishing third. Brady Smith rallied from 20th to finish fourth and Matt Miller rounded out the top five. Francis gets first win for new car owner |
